Located
in the southern coastal area of Guangdong Province,
P.R. China and bordering on Hongkong, the City
of Shenzhen was founded in 1979 with a total
area of 2,020 square kilometers. The following
year saw the establishment of the Special Economic
Zone within the city proper with a population
of 3.95 million.
Shenzhen enjoys a subtropical
maritime climate. The annual temperature, precipitation
and sunshine average 22.4¡æ, 1948 mm and 2,010
hours respectively.
With a coastline stretching
230 kilometers Shenzhen is rich in marine resources
and fit for navigation.
The tremendous growth
of the local economy over the past 19 years
has brought about world recognition highlighted
by its speed and efficiency. Once a tiny border
town Shenzhen has emerged to be one of the fastest
growing and most dynamic regions in the world.
Sitting on the southern
bank of the Shenzhen River, the City of Shenzhen
is only half an hour's drive from Kowloon, Hongkong
with a dozen cross-border links by sea and land.
It serves as a major gateway to the world market
of the flow of people and goods between China,
particularly South China, and the rest of the
world, The handover of Hongkong back to China
has greatly facilitated closer economic and financial
ties between the two cities.
Infrastucture
Of the 17 cross-border facilities,
Luohu check-point is the largest passenger port
while Huanggang is the largest vehicular link
and Yantian the second largest container seaport
in chinese mainland. The Huangtian International
Airport ranks the fourth largest in the nation.
In 1999, the total volume of cross-border passengers
exceeded 106 million, which is 65% of the national
figure white cross-border vehicles number 10.5
million, accounting for 75% of the nation's total.
A modern transportation
network is in place with highways, expressways
and railways reaching out in all directions.
Two trunk raillinks-Beijing-Canton Railway and
Beijing-Kowloon Railway-converge in Shenzhen.
The city boasts 8 harbors and 12 cargo docks.
With a handling capacity in 1999 of 2.98 million
TEUs Shenzhen has the second largest container
terminal in China.
Stretching 19.5 kilometers
and started at the end of 1999, the first phase
of Shenzhen Metro System with a total investment
of RMB 10.58 billion yuan is expected to go
into operation by 2003.
Shenzhen compares fairly
with industrialized countries in its wide application
of modern post and telecommunications facilities.
IDD service is available accessing over 200
cities around the world and 2,000 domestic cities
and townships. Switchboard volume totals 1.78
million lines.
With a daily water supply
of 3.64 million tons and an installed generating
capacity of 3.020 MW, the city is in a position
to fully meet the needs of daily life and production.
