There
are 736 projects involving foreign direct investment
each exceeding US$ 10 million, 109 projects each
exceeding US$ 30 million and 18 projects each
exceeding US$ 100 million. FDI has contributed
to the operation of 17.361 business items involving
a contractual investment volume of US$ 26.4 billion
and a realized value of US$ 13.8 billion. Shenzhen
is home to 58 out of the top 500 foreign invested
enterprises in China. 11 out of the nation¡¦s top
50 enterprises have set up businesses including
Epson Engineering (SZ) Ltd., Ricoh Industry (SZ)
Ltd., and Huaqiang Sanyo Electronics Ltd..
Along with a large influx
of FDI, foreign financial institutions are mushrooming
in Shenzhen, a total of 55 to be exact. They include
such financial consortia as SHBC, Sanwa Bank,
Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Societe Generale de
France, Banque Nationale de Paris, Standard &
Chartered Bank, and Citibank.
Foreign investment covers
a wide range of industries such as electronics,
foodstuffs, textile and garments, pharmaceuticals,
metals and plastics, real estate, finance, transport
and catering business. The respective share of
paid-in foreign investment in the primary, secondary
and tertiary industries is 0.2%,63.77% and 36.5%.
Foreign invested operations
enjoy excellent performance and handsome returns.
Many enterprises follow in each other¡¦s footsteps
in augmenting investments and expanding businesses.
1999 saw 355 foreign invested companies putting
in incremental capital with a contractual volume
of US $ 631 million, which accounted for 46.1%
of the pledged amount of FDI. Among the 30 projects
each involving a follow-up investment of US $
5 million or above, 17 items had US $ 10 million
each to its credit with a contractual additional
investment of US $ 379 million from the foreign
party.
Foreign investment plays a pivotal role
in the local economy. In 1999 the industrial segment
of foreign invested operations accounted for 78.2%
of the city's total value of industrial output
and 53.6% of its total volume of export.
Multi National Corporations
Multinational
corporations are flocking to Shenzhen. Over 100MNCs
have joined in the local economic growth by identifying
180 projects. Listed among the top 500 in 1999
are IBM, Dupont, DEC, Lucent Technologies, Microsoft,
Dow, Emerson, Compaq, HP, Intel, Atlantic Richfield
and Amercian Intel from the US, Toppan Printing,
Nichmen, Hitachi, Sanyo, Mitsui, Ricoh, Mitsubishi,
National, Dai Nichmen, Marubeni, Fujitsu, and
Komatu from Japan, Shell Oil from Holland and
Britain, Samsung Electric of Korea, Philips of
Holland. Siemens of Germany, and ABB of Switzerland
and the Canadian Nortel. |
